Why do women..

Earlier this week I wrote a post asking, "Why do men..." that generated some comments. I was excited because to my knowledge the commenters hadn't ever read my blog.

A tweep, @ghollingsworth, left a thoughtful, respectful and reproving comment. He admonished me for generalizing and perpetrating negative stereotypes of men. Some of the questions may have leaned to the negative side of the male stereotype, others were more general regarding male tendencies, and all were meant in fun.

As with all stereotypes, be they racial, gender specific, economic, geographical, class, etc., they are based on some form of reality, good, bad or indifferent. Stereotyping is part of our lives, whether we want to admit it or not. I'll get back to this issue in another post; my point is I was having fun and did not mean to insult, denigrate or insult anyone.

To prove his point, my commenter asked some questions of women and I feel a duty to ask them; I'm an equal opportunity stereotyper. I know how I would respond; you can let me know how you would answer.

1. Why are women obsessed with celebrities/fashion/reality television?

2. Why do women lie so much?

3. Why do women cheat on their husbands, boyfriends and significant others?

4. Why do women like shoes and clothes?

5. Why do women enjoy pornography (because plenty of them do)?

6. Why do women treat men like they are children?

7. Why do women need constant reinforcement of someones love for them?

Can you believe that I can answer all these questions in just 3 words?:

insecurity and immaturity

To Shonika Proctor's comment, I would add "Because men and women simply DON'T THINK". At least, in response to numbers 1, 2, 3, and 6.

To number 7, we can probably add "fear".

As for #4..."Ohhhhh! Shiny!"

And for #5, because they know they like. I don't get the socialization that women aren't supposed to like it. Now, I'm sure what most men generally like is probably not appealing to most women, but there are women oriented producers, directors and companies out there. Within the right context...there's that word again...women like pr0n as much as men and for similar reasons. Nothing wrong with fantasy, as long as the fantasy context is clear and acknowledged responsibly.
